Team India abused by fans in Nottingham
Nottingham: Indian cricket fans in Nottingham feel let down by their team's performance in the second Test at Trent Bridge. On Monday evening, fans gathered outside the team hotel and didn't hold back the tough talk.
"We thought the 196-run loss at Lord's was bad, but the defeat here is too much for us to take. How can this team claim to be No 1 in the world? Yes, they were consistent, consistent in being poor throughout the Test match after the second day. Some of us have come from America just for this game. What a reward we have been given!"
It is learnt that a few drunken fans abused three players after they posed for photographs with them. When the situation became ugly, the police was called and things were sorted out.
At an Indian restaurant, the owner was livid that Mahendra Singh Dhoni & Co caved in on the fourth day. "Are they really so bad to succumb so badly, I was asked today. And I had to say yes," he said.
Normally, fans used to hang around the team hotel at night, but the numbers withered away. No heroes to worship, one guesses.
A Jamaican taxi driver, Christopher Anglin just couldn't understand how India made England look so superior during the Trent Bridge Test. "You guys disappointed me maan. I just cannot understand how India made England look so unbeatable. You guys cannot play the rising ball maan. No good maan. If Chris Gayle would have played in the series against West Indies, this Indian team would have surely not won," he said.
The big Michael Holding fan expressed his shock over the appointment of Duncan Fletcher as coach. "I am surprised that your Board appointed him. He was no good for England. Okay, England won the Ashes in 2005, but what happened in the next series against Australia? We lost all the Tests."
As he parks in front of my hotel, he was astounded to learn that Fletcher got the job because of former coach Gary Kirsten. "Shocking maan! it is like me quitting my job as this hotel's manager and then recommending someone to replace me. Why would the hotel management employ him?"
Team India is surely the talk of the town. Over to Northampton.

Shahid Afridi is set to feature for Hampshire in their Friends Life t20 quarter-final
Shahid Afridi |
Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi is set to feature for Hampshire in their Friends Life t20 quarter-final, the club has confirmed.
Afridi missed the final match of the group stage of the competition following the death of his father but has since expressed his intention to play for the Royals once again.
He is set to return to England next week and train with the squad ahead of the quarter-final clash with Durham at The Rose Bowl on 7th August.
“First of all it is important to say that the club is saddened by Shahid’s loss and everyone’s thoughts are with him at this very difficult time,” cricket manager Giles White said.
“With regards his involvement in the quarter-final, it goes without saying that we have given Shahid space to come to his own decision on this and we would, of course, have accepted whatever course of action he had chosen.
“Clearly, it is a huge boost to the team to have a player of such obvious quality back with us and we hope very much that, together with the rest of the squad, Shahid can help propel the Royals to a second successive Finals Day.”
Afridi took 14 wickets at an average of 11.5 and hit 100 runs during eight group stage matches for reigning champions Hampshire.
England players tweet their celebration
Trent Brigde: There is no stopping England players. After delivering the knockout punch to India in the second Test, some team members took their celebrations to social networking sites. The charge to express joy here, too, was led by Andrew Strauss.
The English skipper who said he was extremely pleased with the manner in which the Trent Bridge Test had turned around to favour his side, was on twitter minutes after the post-match ceremony. "Half the job done. A fantastic Test Match only let down by the jelly/peach incident on Friday lunchtime and my batting," he posted on the web-site, the last bit a clear hint that mistakes have already begun being looked into and that a respite for India is not expected from the opposite camp. Strauss scored 32 and 16 in his two innings at Trent Bridge.
Man-of-the-match Stuart Broad too, tweeted his excitement but mentioned that celebrations would have to give way to preparations again. "The team have worked hard for these two Test wins. Great effort from everyone. Gotta enjoy tonight, then focus on that 1st hour at Edgbaston."
Fellow-pacer James Anderson posted what seemed like a light-hearted one-liner, on his account. "@timbresnan. I have still not forgiven you." While the reason for his tweet can only be speculated on as of now, perhaps it hinted at Tim Bresnan's haul of five wickets in the second innings which left only three for the more experienced Anderson.
Brenan's reply though, came in immediately after. "Just found out it's Yorkshire Day. Mine has not been bad at all as it goes. Happy tyke day to everyone. Even @JimmyAnderson9," he wrote. The English camp then, clearly, is letting the world join in, in their celebrations, through the web.
